Curry Night Spectacular

Thanks to Paul - doing his best to fill the shoes of the mighty Rob - for the organisation. And thanks to Janet for capturing the evening on film for us. Few things didn't seem to get mentioned in the blog containing the pictures: -

Why was Paul doing a Tarzan impression on the way to the car park carrying (in a staggering manner) a female member of the club to her car.
Has Janet got a mens hair fetish - otherwise why so many pictures of mens heads.
Was Steve making a play for Social Secretary next year by blagging free drinks at the end of the evening.
Is tapping going to become a regular activity at club nights.
Will the dress code for the Christmas Party really be DJ's and ballgowns.
Did we really need to have a discussion about what underwear ladies have on when they play tennis.

If anybody can provide the answers I would welcome a response.

Social Night Out

Our first Social Night Out as one big happy family.

We all met for pre dinner drinks at the Red Lion in Knowle and then on to the Ellora for a crackin curry.

Pictures from the evening. To view all the photos double click on Louise.

Thanks to social secretary, Paul for organizing - don't know if you are aware but Paul has had tonsillitis but has managed to battle on. Brave little soldier

Hopefully we are going to have another social before the Christmas Party and there is talk of sledging at the Snow Dome followed by a bit of tuc at the Three Frech Hens. No doubt social sec will keep us posted.

Arden School Prom Night

Hi Liz
At last I have finally sorted the photos out of your lovely daughter Kate at her Prom Night.

There not brilliant but I think it was because of the rain and I was indoors.

Coventry League

coventry league dinner dance

Hopefully if I have done this right are some photos from the Coventry League Dinner Dance in which members of our lovely club picked up a little trophy (as did steve please see photos)for coming first in the division - they also got promoted to the next division - division one i think.

Great evening, nice food and good company and I think the general consensus was that the girl in the green dress did have knickers on.

Thanks for organizing Steve.

Popadums and Porn

Thank you to all those that attended the last social night out - drinks and a curry in Knowle.

KBC night out March 07

(Click on the phot above to link to the other pics)

It was great to see Katie, who as you can see from the photos is looking fab and behaved herself in the curry house and didn't get chucked out. When do you think you will be back playing Katie?

It was also great to hear about Rob's Porn collection which you may be interested to know is available to rent a very reasonable rates. Not sure of any penalties for late returns.

I believe the next social night is being organized by the Smooth Operator - Paul. So if you have any ideas as to the format of the next night out either speak to the man himself, or put it on the blog - go on you know you want to it's ever so easy and its the latest in thing to be doing!

Photos for your perusal and comments may be added. Hope I have done this right, taken me ages to figure it out and now my pea sized brain really hurts.

Happy blogging

Another win against the Unpopular Poplar

The ladies this week participating were Liz, Nannete, Pauline and Janet. The final score was 6-0. Highlight of the evening exchange of words with the opposition in particular the "Ally" cat.

Decided to get a personalized T-shirt done just like the "ally" cat, but thought I would adopt the name "Scoop" - what do you think ladies?

A link is attached to the Poplar Badminton Club website where feedback is welcomed!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry no photos this week - forgot the camera.

Also thanks for the Cranberries Liz, found a lovely recipe for Pepper, Tomato and Cranberry soup - will bring some in a flask for friday just in case Rob has forgot to sort my veggie meal out.

Curry and Clavicles............

A very enjoyable night was had by all, but first things first...............A big congratulations to Katie and Martin who will be expecting their first baby next May. As you will see from the picture of Katie she has that earth mother glow already - well done Katie and we look forward to seeing you back at badminton.

The evening started off at The Red Lion for pre dinner drinks where the main topic of conversation was Katie and her glow, what Rob feeds his fish and what your partner/close friend likes the best about your body/face. I hope you have all done your homework on this subject as I will be collating answers soon - Sue T, I already have your answers, well done for handing in your homework on time!!!

Off for the Ruby Murray at 9.00 (or thereabouts). With the exception of Steve, all chose from the menu, but Steve went buffet style and tried a bit from everyone elses plate! Great food, never had a sprout in a curry before, but it worked really well particularly the next morning.

Couple of photos were taken; the Arty beer glass shot is by Paul before knocking them over, great catalogue pose by Rob and a lovely one of my clavicles.

A great night and a big thank you to our social secretary Rob for organising.

Also, some of you mentioned that you couldn't access the blog. I can't remember who you are, so if you can email me at Danzey1@yahoo.com, I can send you an invite again. You will then need to log in and set up your own unique password.

When Liz gets that bit between her...........................

teeth, we know that she means business. The ladies participating this week were Lovely Liz, Nan, Grace and JT. Again can't remember scores but the overall win went to Knowle Badminton. General overview, some boring games, over very quickly (all finished at 8.15) and not many bananas eaten this week. Also thank you to Sue T for coming to support us.

Although lacking on the match reporting Paul, I think you will agree another fine photo !

Lost..............not the TV series

or putting another spin on it - we came second.

The ladies this weeks playing Cocks Moore was the Lovely Liz (who got a bit between her teeth), Noel, Grace and Janet.

I think the general consensus was that some games were more enjoyable than others, can't remember all the scores - but there were some decent ones from KBC. The final score was 5-1. Liz and Noel won the only game of the match (Liz really had the bit between her nashers during this game - see photo coming off court). CM not at all HP that they lost this game, or was it because of that smash Liz!!!!!

Jubilee 4 versus Knowle

Yep as Tony has said a dream start to the season. Going 2-0 down in nanoseconds as Tony and Steve gave a startling demonstration of how not to play badminton, it was left to the Chairman (who had been left on the bench for the first two games of the match probably due to his inability to attend pre season training at the Vaults) and the Ladies captain to restore sanity as we dispatched their third pair in 3 games in a way that can only be described as desperate.
Anyway once we were on the scoreboard we rolled the next 6 matches to establish a 6-2 lead at which point Nanette and myself lost the last game as my dodgy hip and Nanette's dodgy calf were responsible. Leaving us with a stunning 6-3 win.
Highlights of the evening - there were three for me. Steve taking longer in the showers after the match than the Ladies (what was that about ??). Tony's opponent refusing to shake hands with him and telling him to grow up. And yes as Tony mentioned the epic 5 minute recount in the pub afterwards by Steve of one of his points where he manfully chased all over the court to retrieve shots and finally with a last gasp effort got back a shot at full stretch - only to have it smashed straight back past him by the opposing lady and lose the point.
See you all Wedneday

Not in the same league......................

as Paul in terms of match reporting - so forgive me.

Game plan for us ladies (Nanette, Liz, Sue and Janet) was to be in and out and home in time for Cracker, Spooks and the finish of an ebay auction.

However, we weren't in and out. Don't know how many games we all played and what the scores were (keeping score is really not my thing) but, the upshot (no pun intended) was that we won the match and we are all still intact!!!!!!!

Match Report

I seem to be having formatting issues!

Match Result
Knowle 4-2 Light Hall

Team News

Knowle Light Hall
Dave Glaister Ben Samworth
Paul Hewitt Jothi Philip
Tony Dadd Pete Marley
Graham Marlow Lee Price

Match Report
A hard fought battle with Light Hall in the opening game of the season resulted in a winning start for Knowle.

Game 1
Dave Glaister Vs Ben Samworth
Paul Hewitt Jothi Philip

The evening didn’t get off to the greatest of starts, with the partnership of Dave and Paul not firing on all cylinders at all for the first rubber, which they eventually lost 15-7.

The second rubber was a closer fought proposition with Knowle leading the way 9-4 at one time. The deficit was overturned though by Light Hall due to some sloppy play by a certain Mr Hewitt (I had been at college all day!!), and Light Hall eventually went on to win the game 17-14, and therefore the game 2-0, in a game that Knowle should really have done much better in! (I really cannot lay any blame on Big Dave for this, it was all me!!)

Game 2
Tony Dadd Vs Pete Marley
Graham Marlow Lee Price

With the pressure truly on Knowle to get a result in the second game of the evening, the partnership of Graham and Tony got off to a blistering start, winning the opening rubber 15-11 in a very tactical, patient game.

The second rubber turned out to be another tactical battle with both teams having to show great patience in many long rallies, of exceptional quality! Unfortunately for Knowle, Light Hall managed to grab the better of some of the more important rallies, and subsequently went on to the win the rubber 15-10.

There was no let up in the third rubber either, with both teams fighting hard for the victory. Eventually though it was Knowle who were able to gain the upper hand in a rubber that went down to the wire due to some exceptional play. They eventually closed out the rubber 15-13, and the game 2-1.

Game 3
Tony Dadd Vs Ben Samworth
Graham Marlow Jothi Philip

With the 2 eldest members of the team playing back-to-back games, you would’ve forgiven them for slightly taking their feet off the pedal!! This did not happen though as Knowle raced through the first rubber 15-2 in no time whatsoever.

The second rubber was slightly more of a competitive match, but Light Hall just didn’t have the necessary craft or power to see off the “Dream Team” of Tony and Graham, who went on to win the rubber 15-5, and therefore the game 2-0.

Game 4
Dave Glaister Vs Pete Marley
Paul Hewitt Lee Price

With the pressure eased slightly due to the “Dream Teams” two victories, the “Youngsters” could go out on to court just looking to be aggressive and play their natural games. This tactic certainly seemed to be working early on in the game with some booming smashes and nice touches by Big Dave and some tight serving by Paul ensuring that the first rubber went to Knowle 15-5.

Again in the second rubber Knowle kept up the same tactics of keeping the pressure on Light Hall, and being aggressive, and this certainly seemed to be knocking the opponents off guard.

Something else that took Light Hall off guard was the power of Big Dave, who inadvertently smashed a shot that just caught the eye of one of the opposition. This resulted in a temporary break in play, after which Light Hall were unable to recover and Knowle went on to win the rubber 15-9, and the match 2-0.

Game 5
Dave Glaister Vs Pete Marley
Tony Dadd Ben Samworth

Just needing the one game to clinch victory for Knowle, you would’ve put your house on the team of Tony and Dave being able to do this!

In the first rubber it looked as though the house was certainly under threat, as although Dave and Tony were still playing well, they were up against a couple of inspired opponents who really wanted to get Light Hall back into the match. The rubber was nip and tuck all the way, but unfortunately Light Hall went on to win it 15-12.

The second rubber was also another hard fought rubber, but one or two little mistakes were creeping into the game of Knowle at this stage, and also lady luck seemed to have deserted them (I personally blame Tony for this, due to him changing T-Shirts 3 times during the match!! I mean what happened to having one lucky shirt?!). With Light Hall continuing to play well, they closed out the rubber 15-8, and the game 2-0, to heap the pressure on to the pairs playing in the final game of the night.

Game 6
Graham Marlow Vs Jothi Philip
Paul Hewitt Lee Price

With the match all to play for in the last game, Knowle came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders (Well maybe I did, but then Graham is the elder statesman of the team and had been off court for 2 matches!), and comfortably took the opening rubber 15-7.

The second rubber was a totally different game, with Light Hall stepping up a gear and producing some fabulous shots. It was nip and tuck all the way through the game, but Knowle just couldn’t take advantage when they had the serve, which eventually cost them the rubber 15-12.

It was now down to a crunch remaining rubber to decide if Knowle could clinch the victory or whether Light Hall could come back and snatch a draw at the death.

Fortunately for Knowle, Graham and Paul got themselves fired up from the start and established an early lead due to some fine play. Light Hall were always fighting to be in the rubber, but in the end this was not good enough as Knowle put in a couple of telling blows and clinched the rubber 15-4, the game 2-1, and the match 4-2.
